Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater

Korea | 2006 | 122min | Color, B&W | Drama

Program Note

Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater, which was introduced with the title of Korea's first full-scale musical film in the mid-2000s, was a unique film that was not seen in the Korean film industry. Even after 15 years have passed, it is considered a new film with a style that is hard to see again in the future.

The film is a confession of love for the cinema, an alchemist of light that can capture all human desires, such as heroic adventure, love and betrayal, and greed. It is also a cinematic rebellion against film industry that makes it impossible to dream any more. The struggles of ghosts, who intrude into the real world and break the boundaries between reality and fantasy, is the director's open provocation to the Korean film industry. (MAENG Soo-jin)
