The Guitar for Mother and Her Daughter traces the history of Korean pop music from the early 1940s through to the early 1960s, blending tragic family stories of separation and reunion into those twenty years. The cast includes Nam Il-hae and such famous pop stars of the time as Lee Mi-ja, An Jung-ae, and Connie Hong. Composer Son Mog-in was in charge of the film’s music and produced the theme song. It is worth noting that singers Lee Nam-sun and Baek Seol-hee make voice appearances. (LEE Junhee)
Gang Chan-u was the younger brother of Gang Young-hwa who worked as a director of photography from the late 1940s to the 1960s. He first entered the film industry working as an assistant director to Lee Gang-cheon during the shooting of Arirang. He made his directorial debut in 1959 with Love After Love starring Choi Moo-ryong, Min-ja Lee, Hwang Hae, and Kang Hyo-shil, and went on to direct a number of melodramas as well as socially critical works.
