PROGRAM NOTE

A once-promising pianist, Karim lost his parents from the war in Syria before it became occupied by ISIS. Shelter bound, he hopes to escape by selling his mother’s keepsake, her piano. He offers others in the shelter a glimpse of hope when he plays the piano but there’s a risk involved. The sound may expose their location. One day, an ISIS extremist destroys the piano along with Karim’s dream. With Karim’s music under fire, the film offers a possibility of music representing despair and hope, optimism and pessimism, conformity and resistance. (KIM Sohye)
