The Queen of Elegy
This film dramatizes the life of Lee Mi-ja, one of the greatest stars in Korean pop music. When she rose to fame with her hit single ‘Camellia Lady’ in 1964, she was not yet thirty years old (born in 1941). The ups and downs of her life provide ample subject matter. The popular director Han Hyeongmo based the film on the radio show of the same title that had been aired half a year before, and Park Chun-seok took produced music for the film. (LEE Junhee)
Han Hyeongmo graduated from an art school in Manchuria. He dropped out of an art school in Japan to join Dongbo Film Studios, where he went on to shoot Viva Freedom as the director of photography. He established Han Hyeongmo Productions and made his debut film Breaking the Wall in 1949. Including his final film The Queen of Elegy (1967), he shot and directed about 30 films.
