Listening to Films, Watching Music
This is one of the many charms of music films. The Jecheon International Music & Film Festival will provide an opportunity for the audience to meet musicians in the films once again. The musicians in three carefully selected films unveil what they hadn't said in the films and the music they wanted to play. At the Cine Concert, which starts before the impression of the films' ending fades, the audience will have a pleasant experience “listening to films and watching music.”
1. Da Capo

HONG Isaac, JANG Ha-eun, and “The Destroyer,” a band that resembles that of their two like “décalcomanie.” Like a line in the film, “to sing is to leave a trace,” although a little clumsy and slow, they are walking their own way. Brazilian legendary percussionist Valtinho ANASTACIO. The Korean Sambistas have sang and danced with ANASTACIO, who stayed in Korea from 2004 to 2019. We want to share the stories and music of yesterday and today of Sambistas, who are still dreaming of tomorrow even in 2020.
He made his debut in the 24th YooJaeHa Music Competition, winning a bronze prize for his own song “Spring,” and he shows his genius as a singer-songwriter and also as an instrumentalist of guitar, keyboard and clarinet. He is also an innate star who crosses genres from popular music to films, showing outstanding acting as an actor in his film debut and the opening film of JIMFF 2020, Da Capo.
To go with the phrase, “a genius guitarist,” she is an up-and-coming real musician at the moment, as collaborating with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and performing the solos at Carnegie Hall. The scene of her authentic classical guitar playing and her guitar playing styles presented in Da Capo will remain in the memory of film fans and music fans.
KIM Dongseok is a guitarist who won the grand prize at the 1st Brazilian Music Contest and a rare performer who plays the cavaquinho in Korea, and JEONG Yoenkyeong is a singer-songwriter who has been playing Brazilian instruments for a long time at Escola Alegria, a samba school, and won the excellence award at the 2nd Brazilian Music Contest.
“Bohemia” is a team of these two musicians and has been playing for a long time to promote Brazilian music from the time when Korea was virtually a wasteland for Brazilian music. Beginning with “DnD,” they have continued their music naturally by forming Bohemia since then, and they have played a variety of Brazilian music based on Samba, such as bossa nova, choro, samba cancao, and samba reggae.
With a new definition of “Bossa Nova, a music that modernizes Brazilian music,” Bruna tells their unique narrative by adding their own warm and innocent feeling. It started with the release of the first EP album [Uma Carta] in 2018, and is showing various attempts on-and off-line to expand beyond the limits of the existing Bossa Nova. Languor, warmth, soft sea breeze. Let's have a drowsy afternoon in Rio de Janeiro that Bruna will express.
The film begins with Tae-il's back looking at ocean waves. Tae-il, who is writing a song about the sea but can't complete it, goes to a country village to meet Jiwon, who had been in a band with him in the past. He meets her working at a music academy there and a rock band of middle school students she teaches. Spending time with the students who are clumsy but full of passion for music and Jiwon who still has sincere affection towards music, he recalls the happiest past time with music.
The reality is tough. The music industry scene chasing commercialism does not fully accept the music Tae-il dreams of. The gap between reality and dream, the tension between Tae-il and Jiwon, and the growing pains of students who dream of rock music. They are the main themes that lead the film.
Da capo does not abandon warmth and hope even in the anxiety and agitation of the characters on the base of deep understanding and affection for music. With two talented musicians, HONG Isaac from JTBC's audition program [Superband], and genius guitarist JANG Ha-eun, the film confesses deep affection for music and musicians. Also, director SHIM Chan-yang's maniac talent for cinema has given birth to a beautiful film of coming-of-age and a young and deep music film. Those who play samba music and dance samba are called “Sambistas.” SAMBISTAS is about the Sambistas living in Korea, not Brazil. At the center of it is the Brazilian percussionist Valtinho Anastacio. After visiting Korea for a performance in 2014, he stayed here for 14 years interacting with Korean musicians.
The film joins the scene of friendship that he and the Koreans shared through Samba, and it still participates in meetings where they get along in love with Samba, even after he left Korea. A man has never been to Brazil but runs a Brazilian restaurant and lives his daily life to the samba rhythm. He emphasizes that Samba is a culture, not just music, and this film testifies to his words. (NAM Da-eun)
The film began with the book [On the Road, Khaosan Road], which director Kim Beomsam encountered by chance. After reading the book and visiting Thailand for the first time, he finally presents a film On the Road, Khaosan Tango, which he had been preparing for 10 years.
A man obsessed with the past and a woman living the present, they all have a painful past and memories in the film, in which tango melody is being played always. Including Piazzolla's “Invierno Porteno,” The beautiful variations played by “La Ventana” comfort the characters with tango sensibility.
Like “Invierno Porteno,” a story full of emotions like loss, joy, sadness, solitude and relaxation, the film weaves a narrative of emotion, relaxed against the sweet and bitter loss, in a beautiful exotic landscape. (MAENG Soo-jin)
